Why do you want serve in the positions you’ve selected?
RYLA gave me the chance to be my authentic self for the first time in my life. It was a leadership camp like I have never experienced before. I want to give back by replicating my same, wonderful experience for another kid who needs a break from conformity, just as I did.
How has your experience as RYLA participante impacted you?
The previous school year, I struggled socially. Every day I felt as though I had to pretend to be someone whom I was not. Because of that, I withdrew from people and built up walls to protect my emotions. RYLA allowed me to be myself without feeling judged. I found myself through my Construction Crew, made friendships that I still have, and learned how to lead through team activities.
How do you feel you can contribute and grow RYLA?
Throughout my high school experience, I have been apart of various sports teams and clubs. As a Junior and Senior, I made an effort to befriend the Freshmen and Sophomores so that they could have an upperclassman that they felt they could trust and go to for anything – whether it be team-related or personal. Teammates have told me that I am the reason they continued to participate in an activity because of the positive experience I had given them.
