Vision

Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

I want to go to RYLA because I want to further improve my own personal leadership skills. I believe RYLA can help me to be a more productive member of our society and to help lead people in my community to success. I care deeply for my community as it provides me with so many important things in my everyday life. It provides me with a job so I can make money, it provides me with a school so I can get an education, it provides me with restaurants so I have somewhere to eat with family and friends, it provides me with stores so I can obtain basic necessities or wants, and it provides me with emergency services to keep me safe. With all that my community provides me, I feel it is only right that I give back. My parents always reminded me of the Golden Rule growing up and I do my best to integrate it into everyday life. I believe RYLA and the experienced people willing to help us can help me serve my community more significantly.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

Service above self to me means to always give others quality service whether that is helping them, being kind to them, or giving them the respect everybody deserves. I think being able to serve others before yourself immensely shows someone’s own maturity and their own level of selflessness. I enjoy helping people. As someone who works in the food service industry, I enjoy cooking and serving people food that they enjoy. This job has taught me a lot about service to people and how giving to others is not only materialistically rewarding but is also its own reward. I think there is still a lot to improve when it comes to my serving others. I sometimes struggle with being patient with people or treating others with respect when they don’t reciprocate that same respect. I hope by attending RYLA, I can improve these flaws.
