Vision

Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

Being part of Interact, I’ve had numerous opportunities to aid my community and its members in all kinds of events, ranging from basketball leagues to raking leaves in elderly community members’ backyards. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this organization because it always shapes me to be a better person, community member, and volunteerist. These are qualities which aren’t always easy to find nowadays. With this knowledge of what I’ve gained from Rotary in the past, I’m seeking an opportunity to improve my leadership skills and a new perspective on leading groups intently through this camp.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

This motto means the world to me. “Service above self” is a big deal in our community of Gothenburg and my family specifically. My parents, Niki and Aaron, are both healthcare providers (PA-C and Pharmacist, respectively) and have served our community members in their walk through life for twenty-two years and counting. They’ve taught me so many skills about putting others above myself, and I credit those lessons as one of the main reasons I’m where I’m at today. Although my parents have been a big influence for me in living out this motto, they are not the only people who accomplish this. Our community of Gothenburg has hundreds, if not thousands of community members that live this motto out each and every day. From paying for someone’s meal to donating at community events, our community does it all. Through these examples, I see this “service over self” as not just a motto, but as a way of life – the best way.
