Vision
Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.
I hope that by participating in the RYLA program, I will get the opportunity to communicate with others and have conversations that push me outside of my comfort zone. It would be fun to have the experience to hear about others’ life stories and also get the chance to share my own. RYLA is a leadership program, but I also want to gain the experience of working with a team. I hope to gain the confidence to learn how to handle different situations, work with all kinds of people, and make decisions that really matter.
Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?
This motto, service above self, means that you put others and your community before you and your time. It’s all about putting others’ needs before your own. It’s important to do service to be selfless and kind, not for the praise or reward, but because it’s the right thing to do. Service above self means to me a community where everyone looks out for each other.
Past and Current Experience
Have you ever volunteered before? – Yes
List any past or present volunteer experiences including dates volunteered and position responsibilities.
Building Blocks Daycare (2020) – I went up to the local preschool, Building Blocks, and read books to the little kids twice every week.
Gothenburg Cemetery (2021) – With a group of people, we went up to the local cemetery and picked out all of the flags after Veterans Day. Then, we went around and picked up old flowers, trash, and branches so that the cemetery looked nice and clean.
Gothenburg Rodeo Grounds (2022) – We went up to the local Gothenburg rodeo grounds and picked up trash. Then, we repainted all of the gates.
Hospital Gala (2022 and 2023) – As a member of the Gothenburg FFA, I signed up to help serve food at the local hospital gala. Afterward, we picked up all of their extra plates and utensils. We washed all of the dishes and made sure that the place was clean before we left.
Stonehearth Halloween (2022 and 2023) – At Stone Hearth Estates, we made goodie bags and wrote cards for each of the residents. We went around walking door to door to hand the bags out. The residents loved the goodie bags and it was super cool talking to them and learning about each of their stories.
Basketball Rotary Tournament (2022 and 2023) – As a participant on the basketball team, I helped do book for the rotary’s basketball tournament. I stayed for four different games and kept track of points, fouls, and timeouts.
Gothenburg City Parks (2023) – Our Swede foundations class went to Ehmen Park and EG West to pick up sticks, branches, and trash.
Gothenburg FFA Concessions (2023) – I volunteered to help our FFA organization do concessions at a youth basketball game. I handed out orders and distributed money.
Hilltop Halloween (2023) – As a member of the citizenship committee, we walked around the rooms at Hilltop and handed out candy to each resident.
Hilltop Christmas (2023) – At the retirement home, Hilltop, we bought a ton of supplies for the residents to decorate Christmas cookies. Each of the residents got two cookies and we helped them put on the frosting and sprinkles.
Church Daycare Help (2020 to 2023) – I volunteered to help at my local church with the baby daycare. I would watch the babies and take care of them so that the parents could attend the service without the hassle of their kids.
Rotary Concessions (2024) – I signed up to help the rotary with concessions during the youth boys’ basketball tournament.
Youth Basketball Camp (2024) – I would help with the youth basketball camps each week. All of the little kids would come to the gyms for a couple of weeks on Friday. So, I would help them grow their skills.
