Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

By participating in RYLA I hope to grow as a leader by developing new skills and learning new leadership methods and ideas. I hope to meet new people who can help me grow as both a leader and a person, while aspiring to be somebody who can help others grow as well.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

The Rotary Club’s motto of “Service above self” means quite a bit to me. First off, the motto challenges me to look at myself and ask what good I have done not for myself, but for my community. Secondly, the motto inspires me to find new ways that I can help the people around me. Finally. the motto acts as a code I want to live by. I do not want to do tasks only because they can benefit me, I want to do tasks that can help the people around me.

Past and Current Experience

Have you ever volunteered before? – Yes

– I volunteer at my home church, Bethany Lutheran, almost every Wednesday of the school year for nearly two years. While there, I work with 7th and 8th graders both in groups and one-to-one. I help them to understand what it means to be a Lutheran, while also helping them to navigate through the ever changing world around them.

– In the summer of 2023 from July 10 to the 14th I went on a Journey mission trip to Denver Colorado. While there I participated in the completion of various tasks such as: Cleaning up local parks, helping to organize through donations at various thrift stores, and helping organize medical equipment that would be sent all around the world to those in need.

– For the past two years I have helped with the Pheasants Forever Youth Mentor Hunt in the fall. As an avid trap shooter, it only made since that I help kids learn the basic rules and safety behind trap shooting. This task can be dangerous, so I also always have an adult supervisor with me.

I have worked at the Harold Warp Pioneer Village since May of 2023. My responsibilities range from working in the gift shop, cleaning, and my personal favorite, giving guided tours.
