Vision

Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

My hope is to gain additional leadership skills for my current high school experience and beyond into my career and adult pursuits. I am looking forward to an opportunity to meet other young people who are interested in developing as leaders.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

Rotary’s motto calls to mind core values I’ve learned through my involvement with Civil Air Patrol (CAP). Those core values are Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence in all we do, and Respect. To me this means one, doing the right thing all the time even when no one will notice or congratulate you; two, serving others before self; three, trying your hardest in every activity that you are faced with even when the odds seemed stacked against you; and four, treating everyone else with the encouragement and positivity that you hope to receive yourself.

Past and Current Experience

Have you ever volunteered before? – Yes

List any past or present volunteer experiences including dates volunteered and position responsibilities.

I have experience volunteering recently with my division of Civil Air Patrol when we assisted with traffic direction and pedestrian safety at the Sioux Falls Air Show. Prior to that, I have volunteered in small service projects with my local United Methodist Church where I have attended since I was very young. Some of these service projects include gathering food for our local food pantry, packaging food for a international food distribution non-profit, and creating hygiene bags for local homeless individuals.

Do you currently have a job? – Yes

List up to three past or current paid job experience including dates employed and responsibilities. Start with your most recent

I have worked as a dish-washer at a local restaurant in Spearfish since the fall of 2022. My responsibilities in this setting have been limited to washing dishes and supporting kitchen staff with other duties including cleaning the kitchen area to meet safety standards. This is my current job.
Additionally, I worked for a local HVAC company over the summer of 2023. My responsibilities in this job included assisting trained HVAC professionals in a variety of tasks including sealing air duct vents with paste, assembling air ducts, and installing air ducts into homes and buildings.
My first job over the summer of 2022 was as a staff member for a local Best Western hotel folding towels and other linens for guests.

Have you participated in extracurricular activities or organizations? – Yes

Please list, in order of importance to you, any school, religious, social, athletic, hobbies or other activities or organizations which you have participated in since the 7th grade

Civil Air Patrol: I have participated in CAP since November of my 7th-grade year and have earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. I attend weekly meetings throughout the calendar year and have attended a week-long Encampment over the Christmas holiday break where I learned leadership and teamwork skills.
Sports: I have participated in Cross-Country, track, and wrestling since before 7th grade and continue to be involved in each of these sports. I also enjoy mountain biking recreationally.
Young Life: This is a non-denominational Christian youth program that I attend weekly. We have a Club that gathers on Monday nights and I also join other young men for a weekly breakfast where we study the Bible and talk about our faith in God.
Fine Arts: I enjoy partaking in choir and drama. I have competed in choir contests and attended a local choral festival recently to develop my singing skills. I was cast in this school year’s musical and play as a supporting role in each production. I intend to continue my involvement in these interests.
