Why do you want serve in the positions you’ve selected?

I would like to serve as a Junior Counselor for many different reasons. To start off, I really enjoyed my time at RYLA this past summer. I made so many lifelong friendships and I would love to experience that again. I also enjoyed learning how to be a leader, and I would like to exercise and further my leadership abilities by being a Junior Counselor this year.

How has your experience as RYLA participante impacted you?

I have been impacted so much by RYLA. I made so many new friends that I have stayed in connection with, and the experience is unlike any other camp I’ve ever been to. As a child, I used to go to summer camp and we would do various leadership exercises and fun things like water day and ziplining. This camp made me feel like I was a kid again. This camp made me feel like it was okay to be myself. Sometimes here at my school, I felt as if I had to change myself for people. This camp allowed me a fresh start with all new people, where I could be myself and everybody would be accepting. I made more friends at this camp in one week than I have in a whole lifetime. This camp allowed me to step out of my shell and my comfort zone in order to be a leader. It made me recognize my leadership abilities. It helped me come back to my own town and be myself and be a leader for those around me.

How do you feel you can contribute and grow RYLA?

I feel like I can contribute and grow Great Plain RYLA by using the leadership qualities that I learned I had and learned how to use as a camper at RYLA. I recently attended a Leadership Conference, and it allowed me to use these abilities and learn more about being a leader. So, even after RYLA, I have still tried to further my leadership qualities. When I go to college I want to become a teacher. It makes me so happy to teach kids something I know and see how happy it makes them to learn and to figure out different things. I would love to teach campers about being a leader and see how happy that makes them.
