Why do you want serve in the positions you’ve selected?
I would like to be a Junior Counselor at RYLA this year because I loved the experience that I had at the camp last year and I would like to see other campers have that same amazing experience that I had. Last year, my JC had a significant impact on me during the duration of the camp and I hope to have that same impact on someone else. Finally, I love spending time with people who are eager to make an impact on this world, and RYLA brings together a unique group of people who all share this goal. Overall I would like to be a JC, not only to better the youth of our community but to also grow as a person during this camp.
How has your experience as RYLA participante impacted you?
My RYLA experience showed me that making friends with strangers is extremely important. When I arrived at camp last year I knew maybe three people. Within the first hour, I made a bunch of friends and although it was scary to talk to people I didn’t know at first, I’m glad I did, because many of these people are still my friends even today! RYLA also showed me how amazing it is to be around people without technology. Without phones or the internet, I was able to have real one-on-one conversations with people. I valued these conversations and it made me think about all of the conversations I miss out on because I am distracted by technology! When I returned home I noticed that I would leave my phone in my room and go upstairs to talk to my parents. By initiating one-on-one conversations, my relationship with my parents became deeper and I was as happy as I could be!
How do you feel you can contribute and grow RYLA?
I would like to contribute to the campers of RYLA as a JC. I want to help them through any issue they might be experiencing and I would like to be a familiar face to them during the camp. In addition, I want to build a connection with these campers that will hopefully lead to them returning to RYLA or cause them to look into how they can volunteer in Rotary organizations. However, I do not intend to stop helping with Great Plains RYLA after I am done being a JC. With the leadership and people skills that I possess, I hope to one day join the leadership team of RYLA and help organize the camp and make decisions that will affect all those who attend.
