Why do you want serve in the positions you’ve selected?

I want to serve Great Plains RYLA in as many ways as possible. This camp had a big impact on me, and I want to give back by volunteering to be on staff. My Junior & Senior Counselors are people that I will always admire and turn to throughout my young adult life, and I want to be there for a group of kids in the same way that Isabelle and Riley were there for me. Being at RYLA helped me grow tremendously as a person, mainly because I was surrounded with people my age with similar passions, such as leadership and personal growth. I want to help this 2023 group of kids feel like they are surrounded with open minds, endless conversations, and actions of service. On the other hand, the REC staff and photographer last year were such great cheerleaders and encouragers of character as well. I know that I can serve RYLA in this role as well. I am willing to work behind the scenes and make things happen to keep the camp running smooth. I am also good behind a camera, and would be honored to document the moments and stories of campers at 2023 RYLA.

How has your experience as RYLA participante impacted you?

The RYLA experience had a huge impact on my life as a teenager, and I believe I will see those impacts far into my adult life. Socially, since RYLA, I have found myself more open to making friends and talking to people in general. I truly credit RYLA with my newfound ability to start a conversation with any stranger, and so far it has especially helped me in working with customers at my job. Mentally, RYLA made me truly understand how to think on a team. From the day of arrival, we were encouraged to include everyone and listen to different perspectives when it comes to problem solving. FInally, RYLA impacted me as a leader. Through the skills I learned at RYLA, I have found myself taking on more leadership roles in school and in the workplace. On top of taking on those roles, I feel much more confident letting others take on a leadership role, which is something that I struggled with before. RYLA taught me that even people you don’t expect can have amazing leadership qualities, if you just give them a chance to show it.

How do you feel you can contribute and grow RYLA?

As a Junior Counselor, I feel that I can contribute to and grow Great Plains RYLA because I bring a lot of maturity and wisdom for my age. Leading a group of people my age has never felt threatening or overwhelming to me. On top of that, I am a great problem solver. I know that if any problem were to arise on a team of students or a team of leaders, I would absolutely do my best to help solve it. As a photographer, I know I can contribute a lot of value to RYLA. I grew up around cameras and equipment, courtesy of my photographer mother. I have a really good eye for photos and love being behind the camera. On top of all of this, I know how to do camera settings really quickly, which is important for settings like RYLA.
