Why do you want serve in the positions you’ve selected?
When I attended RYLA, my junior counselor, Natalie, did an excellent job of making the experience educational, enjoyable, and worthwhile. Her enthusiasm and quality leadership inspired me to take on the challenge of helping other youth get the most out of their RYLA experience. I hope that under my guidance, other RYLA campers can fulfill their leadership potentials and create fun memories that will last for years to come. Also, by applying to become a junior counselor, I hope to “pay it forward” and take what I learned from last year’s camp and teach others about leadership and Rotary. I thoroughly enjoyed my RYLA experience because of people like Natalie, and I want to be one of the reasons why someone else enjoys their time at RYLA.
How has your experience as RYLA participante impacted you?
Upon first arriving at camp, I was shy and hesitant to step out of my comfort zone. However, as time progressed, I realized that RYLA was a place where I could be myself, and everyone there wanted to help each other and grow in their leadership abilities. I came away from RYLA more confident, outgoing, and eager to take on the challenges of responsibility and volunteerism. RYLA opened my eyes to ways I could apply what I learned; one of these opportunities was Interact. I found out about Rotary and its objectives, and I concluded that this was an organization I’d like to be a part of, so I joined Interact, the youth counterpart to Rotary. I’ve also attended more local Rotary meetings, where I’ve shared my experience with RYLA and my involvement in other activities with my community members. In other activities, I’ve stepped up to roles I normally wouldn’t have, such as vice president of both my school’s FFA and FBLA chapters, student council secretary, and class officer applicant. Because of RYLA, I’ve been able to recognize my potential as a leader and truly do what’s beneficial to all concerned.
How do you feel you can contribute and grow RYLA?
Since Great Plains RYLA has made a tremendous impact in my life, I feel that it’s important for me to give back to this organization. By exhibiting quality personality traits and positively impacting the lives of RYLA attendees and staff, I can continue to build on RYLA’s legacy and hopefully inspire more young leaders to grow RYLA as well. Leaving the camp in a better place then when I first came can be accomplished by concentrating on the little things: making anyone’s day better through a smile or laugh, ensuring that all participants and staff have an enjoyable time, and being kind to everyone, no matter what. I can apply what I learned and observed from my first attendance at RYLA to provide a better experience for future attendees.
