Vision
Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.
I would hope to gain more skills in terms of leadership. I am hoping to become the first chair trumpet in my high school band, but also in All-State Band for South Dakota. I know that leadership skills will benefit my opportunity to bring my section together in a way to unify our sound and attentiveness to the rest of the band.
I also sing in my high school choir and chamber choir (a smaller auditioned group that is extracurricular). I know my leadership skill (and gaining strong skills) will help me be able to be looked upon by younger classmates in terms of camaraderie and belonging.
I also hope to gain more character development. I do think I have a good character, I know what’s right and wrong, and mostly abide by that, but I would like to develop more ways/ideas on how to stand up for what’s right around me, in a confident, convincing manner.
Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?
Service about self means to me putting other people’s needs above yours. For example, when I helped at our local feeding south dakota unit with my local Tri-M Music Honor Society to box dinners for people in need. Spending those few 3 hours a couple times a year is a small amount of service I’m honored to help with. Participating in my Tri-MMusic HOnor Society, we also reached out to a local nursing home, Avera Maryhouse, to spend time with the residents of the home. We played games, talked, painted, and planted plants with them.
