Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

I hope to gain confidence in myself as a leader and as a person. I want to push myself outside of my comfort zone, meet new people from different places, and learn how to communicate and work with others more effectively. I also want to better understand what it means to lead with purpose, not just in school, but in my community too.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

To me, “service above self” means choosing to care about others even when it’s not the easiest or most easy option. It’s about stepping up, not for recognition, but because you know someone needs support and you have the ability to help. I think it also means putting your ego aside and understanding that real leadership isn’t about being in charge, it’s about making a difference in people’s lives.
