Vision

Please explain what you hope to gain by participating in RYLA.

There are many things to gain if given the opportunity. Making friends and connecting with other students from around Nebraska is something I am looking forward to. Meeting new people that are creative like me is something I have always wanted to do. I would take this opportunity to expand my knowledge and improve my leadership skills. I would take advantage of the activities planned and create memories and experiences that would be able to assist me in the future. By participating, I would gain more confidence and knowledge about many different things. If I am given the opportunity to participate in RYLA during the summer, I will take full advantage of it and make sure it is time well spent for myself and everyone I interact with.

Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” What does that mean to you?

When I think about the motto service about self I think it means to help others despite the differences for the better. If a person has a different home life than you, you would put that difference aside and step into their shoes to try understanding them better and help more effectively. You can’t help someone much if you don’t try to understand what it’s like for the other person; however, if you’re not in the right state of mind, helping others becomes dangerous for you and the person you’re trying to help. If you’re in a bad mental or physical state your ability to help someone else without further harming yourself is low. Say you’re in a lot of pain but someone needs help with carrying heavy things to their car, that would be a good time to politely refuse and say that it would only make your pain become worse. But if you always refuse regardless of what your state is, it isn’t good. People who put themselves above others all the time can’t help others much because they value themselves above the person they’re trying to help. If you constantly refuse to help or be kind to others then it’s more likely no one will help you when you ask for it. Serving others before yourself can be beneficial to yourself and the other person. When you help others, you’re helping yourself as well. It’s always a good thing to serve others above yourself.
